McNeilus Steel

Wall sculpture for headquarters lobby

This piece is six feet by seven feet and includes two glass and two steel image boxes 1' x 2' mounted to the side of  I beams in front of a steel arch. The Arch represents the Redbud leveler that stretches coiled steel (image box 2) dead flat so it can be laser cut (image box 3 and 4). The first image is the founder Harry McNeilus with the 1948 Chevy farm truck he used to deliver steel.

Image boxes:

1) Harry McNeilus (sandblasted glass) 2) Steel coils (arced six" wide flat stock) 3) Laser cut panels         4) Spark shower underneath the laser cutter (sandblasted mirror)

Redbud Arch construction

The arch is constructed of 20ga sheet with 2" wide doubled flat along the top and 1"wide flat along the bottom. It will be painted red and mounted on the wall behind the other elements.

Concept drawing

The laser itself is not visible but there is quite a shower of sparks underneath when it is cutting steel.

This is the hardest image to photograph. It is sandblasted into the back side of gold mirror. The front surface reflects any light and washes out the image. In person its quite dramatic.

The piece is on the wall in McNeilus Steel's headquarters in Dodge Center, MN. 08/25/08

Installation Plan

Laser skeleton

The laser box is layers of laser cut steel in a six inch deep box. It is the third image from the left in the concept drawing. Steve Klomps chose and cut the patterns. Their precision influences the rest of the piece. The laser skeletons in the photo at the far left inspired the use of laser cut panels to showcase McNeilus capabilities
